Teaching Leaders

Teaching Leaders is a unique two-year development programme aimed at strengthening the capacity of those who lead teaching and learning closest to the action on the front line of urban schools: middle leaders.

Developed in partnership with the NCSL, Teach First and Future Leaders, the programme aims to unlock the potential of the best middle leaders in order to have a measureable impact on the achievement of the staff and students for which they are responsible.

Teaching Leaders provides middle leaders with the specialist knowledge and practical training to help them excel in their role.  It focuses on leadership and management, and draws from years of experience and research in urban school leadership.  Participants undergo comprehensive training, and are assigned a Leadership Coach to focus on the unique challenges they may face on the journey. Skills developed in the programme are put into practice with a participant-led Improvement Initiative, which delivers measureable results in school.

The programme was launched in 2008 and now has 79 participants working across 53 urban schools in London.  All of our participants have remained in complex urban schools and 35% of the first cohort has already been promoted or given extra responsibility in their schools.  We have received strong evaluations both externally and from participants during the first two years.  Now with secured support across the political spectrum and from heads nationwide, Teaching Leaders plans to expand to urban schools across the UK during the next few years.
