Future Leaders

The Future Leaders programme is now part of the National College’s (formerly NCSL) new Accelerate to Headship programme. This is designed to accelerate the development of teachers with the potential to graduate from the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) within four years.

Accelerate to Headship has two distinct routes:

Future Leaders - a three-year leadership development programme for current or former teachers who are committed to leading a challenging urban secondary school and improving the life chances of pupils, regardless of background.

After a year-long apprenticeship under a successful urban headteacher, cutting-edge UK and US-based training and coaching and mentoring from education leaders, participants should gain a senior leadership role after 12 months. They should also be accepted on to the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) within three years, and obtain a headship position after an intense four years. Participants and residency schools are recruited for London, the North West, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber.

Tomorrow’s Heads - suitable for teachers and professionals who are not teachers who have their sights set on headship in primary, secondary, or special schools.

Applications for both opened in December 2009 and schools are recruited (for Future Leaders route only) throughout the year.
