Rock down to Electric Avenue to see EGA’s talent

Wednesday 9th April 2014

Six talented students from ARK’s Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton have had their photographic and poetry talent displayed to the public on three billboards in their local community in Electric Lane, just off the famous Electric Avenue.

To celebrate World Poetry Day on 21 March and the fruition of a term’s challenging literature project, many more Evelyn Grace students had their work displayed at an exhibition and reception held at their school.

This was part of a bigger project ‘Eliot Now’ which has been running in 10 schools that form the Brixton Learning Collaborative and generously funded by the Clore Literature and Poetry Awards. Norris Morrissey, English Teacher and Poetry Lead said: “Pupils enjoyed this opportunity to learn about the poem through imagery and described this process as: an opportunity to bring literature to life.”

The poems will be on display until the end of April, 2014. Here’s a few samples:

Breaking
By Nii

Breaking out of the tight green ball
Tearing through the dense gravel
Smashing through the impenetrable surface
Only to be welcomed to a dark, lonely world
She stretches out towards the last drop of
Light

Light in the Dark
By Remi

The pathway to faith is bright
Spent so long lurking in darkness - but no
Maybe we still have a chance to be free
Forget about the boarded doors
Realise when it breaks
